Erectile dysfunction is the inability for a man to get and sustain an erection sufficiently strong for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is otherwise known as impotence and is surprisingly common.
Erectile dysfunction in younger men may result from psychological causes such as anxiety about sexual performance, chronic depression, or emotional disturbances due to relationship difficulties. In older men it is more likely due to physical causes such as narrowing of the arteries going to the penis which is commonly associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes (a condition caused by too high a concentration of glucose in the blood).
It has been estimated that almost 50% of all men between the ages of 40 to 70 will have a degree of dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction could therefore be, in an older man, a sign of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, and it is wise in such cases to have one’s blood pressure checked. In the younger man there is usually no physical problem and so certain drugs can be used to improve the situation. The most well-known of these is Viagra, (sildanafil citrate), which is termed a PDE5 inhibitor, but there two others that are effective also. One of these, the original tadalafil (Cialis), even has the advantage of being longer lasting. (more...)
